How can I fix the chuck on my Alltrade 5 speed drill press?

Question:

I have a Alltrade 5 speed drill press Model 1960 D 513N
The chuck came off. Is there any way to fix this?

Answer:

Hello Bob,
The chuck will come off as a result of chatter developed during the drilling process, when you are drilling at the wrong speed and, usually, with larger bits. The spindle end (Tapered) needs to be perfectly smooth as well as the chuck cavity that the spindle fits into. The two items fit together with friction. After you've cleaned each area as explained, place the chuck onto the spindle, and using a scrap piece of wood,(making sure the chuck jaws are recessed) strike the wood with a hammer so that they become married. If the chuck keeps coming off, it's usually a sign that the chuck cavity or the spindle taper is not smooth.

Thanks for asking,

Carl
