Why does it say to use water and not oil with a 3 pc diamond sharpening set?

Question:

I have your Worksmith 3 pc diamond sharpening set. In the directions, it says do not use oil, use water. Why? Does oil loosen up the diamond or something? Since I have mine, not quite a year, I only use water, and I see traces of rust is this normal? Thank you

Answer:

Steven,
I forgot to provide an answer to the use of water in the sharpening process. Using oils during the sharpening has a tendency to clog the pores of the sharpening media whereas water does not clog, and allows you to wash off the sharpening media. As for the rust, I assume you’re talking about rust forming on the metal surface and that is normal but, this can be eliminated by wiping with your wife’s cooking oil after the sharpening operation.

Thanks for asking,

Carl
