Problems removing a shock piston?

Question:

Since the shock piston pushes outward, I have discovered that using a jack to raise the car in order to loosen and remove the shock does not work. The higher I raise the car, the more the piston expands outward, keeping it firmly in place. Is there some way to prevent the shock from opening so that raising the vehicle will allow the shock to be removed? I am referring to the rear shock absorber, which is paired with a leaf spring.

Answer:

Hello Robert,
You got a chuckle out of me on this one. I understand what you’re trying to do but as you indicate, raising the car also increases the stroke length. I would remove the bottom first but since you did not indicate what type of car we're dealing with, I'm not sure of the attachment configuration both top and bottom.

Thanks for asking,

Carl
